Has something like this ever happened to you: a friend of yours gives you a call in the evening to invite you to lunch the next day. You are very busy and have been waiting to spend some quality time with yourself, your children, your husband, and just the prospect of going out to lunch with this particular friend makes you feel heavy and exhausted. Still, you say “yes” to her anyway because you feel you need to in order to maintain your friendship, or you fear that otherwise she will be upset with you since this is the third invitation you are turning down.
What you have just experienced is an encounter with your inner wisdom, and a subsequent denial of it.
We do this in so many areas in life from the seemingly small decisions like when we know intuitively that eating another pizza lunch on the go is going to leave us feeling upset and uncomfortable with ourselves but do it anyway because we think we don’t have enough time to do otherwise, to the big things like knowing deep inside that our long-term relationship is unhealthy in many ways but we fear the consequences of breaking it off so much that we just silently suffer through it day after day.
Inner wisdom is also known as your inner voice, higher power, gut instinct, intuition, and inner sense. Essentially, it is the part of yourself that knows exactly what is right for you, beyond your rational thoughts or any conventions that you hold. Inner wisdom is so important and powerful that as soon as you are ready to tap into it, you can start living your life aligned with your true purpose with joy, balance and loads of positive energy.
So how do you come to receive the messages from your inner wisdom? In a number of ways: some people “see” it through a vision in their imagination. Others receive it through “hearing” it like an inner voice, a whisper, or a loud voice. Others feel it in their body, they might get a chill, all of a sudden feel tired or have tears come to their eyes.
You actually have access to your inner wisdom at all times. And if you hear and listen to it, your inner wisdom can support you in every possible situation. For example, listening to your inner wisdom can help you:
- Know which organizations to partner with in order to bring greater visibility to your company
- Choose foods that are supportive and nourishing for you
- Set your rates for growth and prosperity
- Recognize if a new person in your life is a good fit as a romantic partner
- Know how to work with and help your clients, colleagues, or friends
Sometimes you may follow-through on your inner wisdom without even realizing it. You may stop eating intuitively because you are full, or other times you just know that you have to stop working because you are totally exhausted. Yet, most of the time, we don’t realize that we have access to our inner wisdom even when we have all sorts of signals going off in our bodies, hearts and minds.
Why can’t we understand the language of our inner wisdom communicating with us? Because as a culture and society we have been cut off from it. Our inner wisdom – our brilliance – is stored in our bodies. For the most part, we have been separated from our bodies through:
- Valuing the mind over the body
- Judging our bodies and appearance
- Illness and pain in our bodies
- Trauma to our ourselves and bodies, including abuse, rape, and abortion.
Getting back in touch, then, is a process we have to re-learn.
Being able to recognize your own ability to tap into your inner wisdom and the brilliance of your body is a foundational piece to being able to make decisions that are aligned for you in your life.
It’s vital to explore how it has functioned in your life thus far so take a moment to ask yourself:
- When was a time in your life when you were powerfully able to tap into your inner wisdom. Write down what that situation was. Did you see it, hear it, feel it in your body? Did you actually listen to that piece of inner wisdom? Did you follow-through? How did it feel?
- When was a time that you were so rushed or disconnected that you made decisions from your head or your fear and not from your inner wisdom. What was the outcome? How did that feel?
The next step is to learn how to tap into your inner wisdom so that you can make aligned choices in your life is to connect deeply to your body. Inner wisdom is like a muscle that you have to work out. The more you work it the quicker you will be able to access it!
